Loving Lately: Lipsticks

It’s no secret that lipsticks are my favorite beauty item, next to mascara.  I’ve been doing my very best to use makeup low or completely free in toxins and my lipstick is especially important.  I’ve read that regular lipstick wearers ingest 3.7 pounds of lipstick in a lifetime!  So it’s really important that we’re not ingesting gross ingredients like lead, parabens, and phthalates.  Check out this chart from the FDA ranking common lipstick brands on how much lead they contain (scroll to the bottom for the expanded study). So nasty.

Here are my top picks for better alternatives that actually work.

  1. Glossier Generation G Lipstick, $18
Gen G is arguably my favorite lipstick of all time.  It goes on matte, feels like a weightless balm, and is buildable, so you can get a sheer wash of color or a bold pout.  It’s my go-to because I can apply it without looking in a mirror and it doesn’t dry out my lips.  My favorite shades are “Cake” (third from left) and “Jam” (second from right). Fun fact:  If you fangirl-ed over Ana’s lip colors in Fifty Shades Darker, you’re in luck:  Ana can be spotted wearing “Jam” at the masquerade ball!
Paraben-free, phthalate-free, cruelty-free, and vegan.  Use my code for 10% off your purchase.
  2. Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner, $26
To be honest, the only reason I bought this was because Ana wore the shade “Arabian Knights” in Fifty Shades Darker — are we seeing a theme that I obsessed over her lip colors?  I’m actually really impressed with this one.  It’s one I go to when I want a richer color.  True to its name, this lipstick is conditioning.  It’s always in my jacket pocket.  Uses 100% natural dye and is 85% organic.
  3. Savvy Minerals by Young Living Lipstick, $29.93 (retail), $22.75 (wholesale)
I love just about every product Young Living offers, but when they took over a cosmetics line, I fell in love even more.  Savvy Minerals currently offers five shades of lipstick, my favorite being “Uptown Girl” because, obviously, Billy Joel.  The coverage is buildable and long-lasting.  The only downside I’ve found is that when it gets a little cold, it can start to drag.  Just tuck it in your bra as you get ready or warm it between your hands and it should be good as new!  You can order it through this link; on its own or as part of the brand new Savvy Minerals Premium Starter Kit!
  4. jane iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain, $25

I’ve been using Dior Lip Glow for years, but this jane iredale balm is just like it but much better for you.  It works with your body’s pH to create a custom shade perfect for your lips.  I have Forever Pink and Forever Peach, but Forever Pink is more my style.  This can also be used as the perfect blush for your skin tone!  Who doesn’t love a multi-tasker?
  5. BITE BEAUTY Amuse Bouche Lipstick, $26

Last but certainly not least, this lippie from BITE BEAUTY is everything you expect in a high-end product but sans junk.  It glides on, provides great pigmentation, and wears evenly.  The best part is that there are 39- yes, 39!- shades available at Sephora.  No gluten, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or petrochemicals.  This ranks up there with MAC lipsticks for me.Bonus: BITE BEAUTY Agave Lip Mask, $26

Every good lipstick application starts with good lips!  I’ve had my tube of Agave Lip Mask for about 2 years now.  I use it at night and when I need a thick balm during the day, especially when my lips are chapped.  I’ll also apply it and then gently scrub with a washcloth to exfoliate but still take care of my lips at the same time.  It comes in four shades: clear, tan, rose gold, and champagne.

There are a lot more brands that I haven’t tried like Juice Beauty, W3ll People, Beauty Counter, and 100% Pure.  If you have any favorites, leave them in the comments!

With love,
